Risk appreciation in health and social care

"I found all aspects enjoyable, more importantly it was engaging and reminded me of why I have a role in risk appreciation. Certainly better than the old H&S 'who is liable'!"

Following recent changes in the law around health and social care a proper appreciation of risk assessment and management has become vital for workers at all levels. This is much more important than it used to be. From unqualified support workers to senior managers and professional staff everyone involved in the care of other people needs to know at least the basics of risk appreciation.

This course, in typical AMJ style, takes a potentially difficult topic and makes it accessible to workers at all levels. Practice illustrations and examples are used throughout to help people to 'get the feel' of proper risk management without overloading them with complex legal cases. The aim of the course is to equip participants to manage risk situations confidently and competently. Practice based exercises help them to use what they have learned in the workplace by applying straightforward principles to a variety of situations.

The course includes:

What is risk?
Some legal principles around risk
Duty of care
Organisational risk management and the right to take individual risks
Staying safe and staying within the law
Therapeutic risk-taking and the HSE perspective (how far should we go)
Shared decision-making
Risk and mental capacity
Constructing the risk assessment
Matching the risk assessment to the care/support plan

No previous knowledge or experience is necessary for the basic course.

More advanced training is also available for more experienced workers.

Both versions can be tailored to your particular requirements and delivered at the venue of your choice.
